Aura and Gin Fizz in Bilbao

We took a quick weekend trip to Basque country and stumbled (not literally) into a couple of lovely experiences at Aura and Gin Fizz in Bilbao.

Aura is a small restaurant a block off the main square in Bilbao’s old city. The place was a quiet respite from the boisterous partying that was going on. The owner Alicia was warm and accommodating and the food, cooked by her son was terrific.

Highlights included a regional risotto-like dish – Arroz de Setas – that uses no dairy but in which the rice is slowly incorporated with an herbal, vegetable stock. I had it with beef medallions. The other great dish was a passionfruit eclair. THe creany sauce contained their version of pop-rocks!

We can’t wait to get back to try more from the menu. Here is the website Aura.

Later in the evening, tired and hankering for a cocktail, we found Gin Fizz. A small, but bright bar with an excellent selection of liquors and even more impressive talent behind the bar.

If you find yourself in the north of Spain, you should visit Aura and Gin Fizz in Bilbao. Other posts from our trip to Spain.
