Food Week September 26 – October 2, 2022

Welcome to Food Week September 26. Our thoughts go out to folks dealing with the aftermath of Ian. Lots of new this week: new labelling, new allergen testing, new sustainable packaging, new ways to recycle can holders. new salmonella regulations, new winter cocktails and a new TikTok trend: butter boards. Enjoy.

MACRO

  • Financial Markets fall to a 2 year low
  • But it could be worse, you could be British.

RETAIL AND CONSUMER

  • What really is healthy food? FDA wants to make some labeling changes.
  • Consumers are concerned about sustainability, even if they choose delivery.
  • Over 138,000 items now have pumpkin spice flavor. Impossible but completely believable.

RESTAURANTS AND FOODSERVICE

  • I am old enough to remember how hesitant QSR chains were to expand into breakfast. Now they couldn’t live without it.
  • Adult Happy Meals coming out but it strikes me as essentially a PR move. Because I don’t really need a Grimace toy.

FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN

  • Can holders can be easily reused. The tricky part is setting up a capture system
  • More consolidation in food, this time in sugar, during Food Week September 26
  • New teeth for regulators trying to halt salmonella – at least in chickens.

FOOD WEEK SEPTMBER 26 LAGNIAPPE

  • Great news for those allergic to fish; a way to avoid food challenges through testing species.
  • .Sugar substitutes during adolescence appears to harm memory later in life. Also gut flora….
